Original Joan Ellacott costume designs
on eBay

When you think of the Fourth Doctor era, the costume designers everyone remembers are James Acheson and June Hudson.
their work was iconic but a number of other designers contributed to the look of some of the most landmark serials along the way.

One of these, The Deadly Assassin, was designed by Joan Ellacott, and a portfolio of her entire career has been split and sold on eBay. Amongst the designs for a variety of costume dramas there are four of her designs for the robes worn by the Time Lords and the returning Master as seen in The Deadly Assassin.

Two of the designs have fabric swatches attached, and one has George Pravada’s measurements!

4th Doctor limited edition costume design print on eBay!

I just came across this item on eBay.

I find it a little curious as it is different from a version of the James Acheson costume design I had previously seen (see right), making me wonder if this has been drawn more recently.

Still, its a nice item and according to the listing hand signed by the designer.

Limited edition Tom Baker
costume design
This year Doctor Who celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

Here is your opportunity to purchase a piece of television history!

Celebrated Costume Designer James Acheson designed the costumes and monsters for more than 30 episodes of Dr Who between 1972 and 1976.

Acheson worked initially with Jon Pertwee (The 3rd Doctor) but went on to create the iconic look for the fourth incarnation of “Doctor Who”, Tom Baker, who is still considered by many as the most beloved and successful of the actors to have played the role. Acheson’s initial design of the brown fedora hat, the red corduroy jacket and the ridiculously long striped scarf, is an image that has endured for more than 35 years.

James Acheson has worked on international film productions for more than 30 years. His work includes costume designs for the ‘Spiderman’ trilogy and most recently ‘Superman -Man of Steel’. He has won no less than 3 Academy Awards (Oscars) for his film work on such films as ‘The Last Emperor’,’ Dangerous Liaisons’ and ‘Restoration’.

This is a high quality giclée print of the memorable costume design for Tom Baker’s first appearance as the 4th Doctor Who, in the first episode of “Robot”, complete with costume notes listed at the side of the drawing. This print is now offered for sale, in a strictly limited edition of 100. Each of these prints is individually signed and numbered by the artist.

Someone seems to be selling off a small collection of June Hudson costume design prints, original sold at an event in Longleat.

Her designs are always so lovely to look at, I thought it would be nice to share them here, and if you’re quick, you could snap one up!

EVEN MORE 4th Doctor items on eBay

It’s been a bit quiet lately for original Fourth Doctor items on eBay, but I have come across one thing worth looking at.

It’s a costume design from The Brain Of Morbius by L Rowland Warne.

A similar costume design was sold on eBay back in March (see right).

That was just a good colour copy, but this one is the original.

Brain Of Morbius
Costume design
SOLD FOR £411.50
after sold for £944.61 to non-payer

This is an original costume design drawing from the 1975 Doctor Who serial the Brain of Morbius.

It is a finely detailed piece, in pencils and watercolour. There is a small tear to the top edge which fortunately doesn’t encroach onto the artwork itself and one or two minor bumps in the paper which I’m sure will come out once the artwork is framed.

These are small flaws in what is an incredibly well preserved piece of Doctor Who history. Written on the back is: “Ohica + outdoor robe hat as 2nd sisters” The piece measures 295mm x 410mm.

I obtained it from a well known collector in 2002, and it has remained in storage ever since. A piece of artwork as exquisite as this deserves to be on display as the centrepiece of someone’s collection.

MORE 4th Doctor items on eBay

Not strictly a screen worn costume, this item popped up on eBay this month and I thought it worth sharing as it is beautifully drawn.

The Brain Of Morbius
costume design
SOLD FOR £51

I was lucky enough to own the original of this sisterhood costume sketch for many years. Before I sold it I had 2 copies made. One for me, and one for a friend. Sadly the friend passed before I could give it him. Hence now after holding onto to it a few years I feel the time is right to let another collector enjoy it. It is printed on top quality glossy paper. You will not be disappointed. The original would cost a lot of money now, so for the true fan this is a cheaper version. I only have one when its gone its gone.

The size is 42cm lengh by 30cm width. Also this isn’t some cheap photocopy done by myself. It was done at a local art supplies shop on their professional equipment on super thick glossey paper.

James Acheson -
Dressing Doctor Who

I had a nice surprise through my letterbox today: my copy of the Jon Pertwee story The Mutants on DVD (see right).
It is officially not out until Monday, so it was a bonus to get it a couple of days early.

I know it’s a Third Doctor release, but of considerable interest to Fourth Doctor fans is a 20 minute featurette talking to James Acheson. The Mutants was the first time he worked on the series, but of note he would later go on to design Tom Baker’s costume for Robot.

He talks at length about his work on The Three Doctors and dressing not only Jon Pertwee, but also William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton; about devising a suitable costume for Elizabeth Sladen on her inital outing as Sarah Jane in The Time Warriror; about perpex bowler hats for Carnival Of Monsters; building Giant Robots; creating the Zygons; going on wild goose chases for period costumes for The Masque Of Mandragora; before becoming disillusioned with his work on The Deadly Assassin.
